QUEENS, N.Y. - All 17 Red Storm participants at the NCAA Northeast Regionals qualified for NCAA Championship play, but schools are capped at two fencers per weapon during the NCAA Championships. With six total weapons, each school can only have 12 competitors.
For the Red Storm, 11 fencers were selected by the NCAA Committee to compete in the field of 144 competitors during the NCAA Championships from March 20-23 at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Live stats will be available on NCAA.com and ESPN3 will air the semifinals and championship bouts for each weapon.
For the men's team, freshmen Cooper Schumacher and Yevgeniy Karyuchenko will compete in epee, senior Max Blitzer and sophomore Michele Caporizzi will compete in foil, and freshmen Roman Sydorenko and Ferenc Valkai will compete in saber.
Blitzer and Caporizzi have both competed in the NCAAs. Blitzer placed 14th as a sophomore in 2012 and Caporizzi placed ninth as a freshman in 2013, earning All-American honorable mention in the process.
For the women's team, senior Alina Ferdman and junior Isis Washington will compete in epee, sophomore Marta Hausman and freshman Irene Spezzamonte will compete in foil, while senior Alexandra Tannous will compete in saber.
This will be Ferdman's fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships. She has earned All-America honors twice in her career, placing 10th as a junior in 2013 and sixth as a sophomore in 2012. She also placed 13th as freshman in 2011. Hausman also has NCAA experience as she earned All-America honorable mention as a freshman in 2013.
