PRINCETON, N.J. - The St. John's women's track & field team will look to continue its buildup to championship season when the Red Storm returns to Princeton, N.J., on Saturday, April 12 to take part in a quad meet with host Princeton, Vermont and Monmouth. St. John's competed in Princeton last weekend, posting a number of personal-best performances and winning a number of heats at the Sam Howell Invitational.
The Red Storm was originally scheduled to compete in the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships this weekend before the event was cancelled.
"We are very fortunate to be able to replace the Metropolitan Championships with the Princeton Quad as the teams competing will challenge us to our maximum," said Red Storm head coach Jim Hurt. "We have had two weeks of great practice and if the weather warms we should be able to produce the best performances of the year."
Senior Danette Hinton travels to Princeton full of confidence, as the throws specialist has secured back-to-back BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week awards after setting a new personal best in the hammer throw in her last two outings. At last weekend's Sam Howell Invitational, Hinton launched a throw of 56.33 meters to claim third place and improve upon the sixth-best throw in program history. The previous week, Hinton secured the first weekly conference award of her career by reaching a mark of 55.78 meters in the event, 4.5 meters better than her career best coming into the season.
Also setting a personal best in Princeton last weekend was sophomore Pariis Garcia, who enjoyed a breakout indoor campaign this winter and has shown no signs of slowing down in the early outdoor season. Garcia placed 11th overall in the 200-meter dash at the Sam Howell Invitational in a career-best time of 25.17 seconds, while senior Corrine Williams finished one place behind in 25.28 seconds. Sophomore LaTasha Collins also enjoyed a productive outing in New Jersey last weekend, setting a new personal best in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.29 seconds.
In the 400-meter hurdles, seniors Amber Allen and Shayna Presley will continue their chase for the first sub-60 second clocking of the season, while in the middle distances, junior Chelsea Trant and sophomores Stephanie Van Pelt and Michelle Van Pelt will look to continue improving as championship season nears.
