QUEENS, N.Y. - A season's best performance and third-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay highlighted a trip to the Sunshine State for the St. John's track & field quartet of junior Claire Mooney, sophomore Pariis Garcia and seniors Shayna Presley and Amber Allen at the 56th Annual Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., on Friday afternoon.
The Red Storm relay team placed third in the first of three sections and third overall in a time of 3:40.58, less than a third of a second behind runner-up Washington State and some three seconds off of race winner Kansas State. St. John's time is its fastest of the current outdoor campaign and the fastest time in the BIG EAST Conference by over three seconds entering the weekend.
All four Red Storm athletes competed in individual events prior to lining up in the 4x400-meter relay. Mooney was a heat winner in the 400-meter dash, cross the finish line first in the fourth section in a time of 55.08 seconds, good for 22nd overall. In the same event, Garcia took four in the fifth section and 36th overall in a fine time of 55.77 seconds, less than a third of a second off of her personal best set at last weekend's Princeton Quad Meet.
Competing in the 400-meter hurdles, Allen and Presley finished 36th and 37th overall, respectively, Allen completing her lap in 1:01.74 and Presley posting a time of 1:01.91.
St. John's is back in action on Monday, April 21, as the Red Storm hosts its first home competition of the season, the Monday Track & Field Meeting. The afternoon event will mark the first track & field competition held on the University's brand new $1.5 million Regupol track facility in Queens, N.Y., and is expected to feature competitors from a number of local colleges and track clubs. All are invited to come watch the meet, which is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the first running event, the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles.
