PRINCETON, N.J. - Another hammer throw performance for the St. John's history books by senior Danette Hinton as well as a number of front-running efforts highlighted a successful day of competition for the Red Storm track & field team at the Sam Howell Invitational hosted by Princeton University on Saturday, April 5.
Hinton, the reigning BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week, set a new personal record in the hammer throw for the second consecutive week, reaching 56.33 meters to place third and improve upon the sixth-best throw in program history. The senior had just set a new personal best of 55.78 meters at last weekend's Victor Lopez Bayou Classic in Houston, Texas, smashing her previous career best by over 4.5 meters.
"We had a successful day at the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton," said Red Storm head coach Jim Hurt. "Danette Hinton set another personal best in the hammer throw to get things going and we were able to move some of our sprinters down into lower events, with a couple delivering heat-winning efforts. Our younger student-athletes in the middle distances and jumps gained some experience that will serve them well in the weeks ahead. We look forward to returning to Princeton next week for a quad-meet with Monmouth and Vermont."
Hinton reached her new career best of 56.33 meters on the first throw of the competition, and surpassed the 54-meter mark on next two throws before fouling her final two efforts. Fifth place on St. John's all-time hammer throw list belongs to Gina LoMonaco, who reached 56.99 meters in 1998.
On the track, St. John's enjoyed a number of top-10 overall finishes, starting in the 400-meter hurdles with seniors Amber Allen and Shayna Presley placing fourth and fifth overall, respectively. Allen won her heat with a time of 1:02.47 while Presley was not far behind in 1:02.77.
In the 100-meter dash, sophomore LaTasha Collins claimed the win in the third heat in a new personal-best time of 12.29 seconds, while senior Corrine Williams won the next heat in a season's best time of 12.37 seconds. Collins was also a heat winner in the 200-meter dash in another personal-best split of 25.28 seconds to place 12th overall, as was sophomore Pariis Garcia, who crossed the finish line first in her heat to finish 11th overall in a fine time of 25.17 seconds, a new personal best.
Stepping up to the 1,500-meter run, twin sisters and sophomores Stephanie Van Pelt and Michelle Van Pelt finished within a second of each other to place 18th and 19th overall, respectively, Stephanie posting a time of 5:00.04 and Michelle crossing the finish line in 5:00.65.
In other field results, freshman Kenyatta Louis continued her impressive rookie campaign at St. John's in placing 10th overall in the triple jump with a mark of 11.11 meters.
In the relays, Allen, Williams, Collins and senior Maya Lewis combined to place third in the 4x100-meter relay in a time of 47.10 seconds.
Up next, the Red Storm returns to Princeton to take part in a quad-meet involving the host Tigers, Vermont and Monmouth.
