QUEENS, N.Y. - Following yet another record-breaking campaign and as the culmination to a historic four-year career wearing the colors of the Red Storm, recently graduated senior attackman Kieran McArdle has been named a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) second team All-America selection. McArdle earns the distinction for the second season in a row, garnering the highest individual honor ever bestowed on a lacrosse player in school history in back-to-back years after also being named All-America honorable mention as a sophomore in 2012.
All-America recipients from Division I, II and III as well as the Scholar All-America honorees will be recognized at the 2014 USILA All-America Awards Ceremony presented by Northwestern Mutual at the Baltimore Hilton in Baltimore, Md., on Saturday morning ahead of the NCAA Lacrosse Championships.
McArdle was also named a member of the USILA 2014 Scholar All-America Team, which recognizes student-athletes with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 who have been selected All-America, a member of a North/South team or excelled at the league or conference level. McArdle earns the accolade for the first time in his career.
"Kieran's contributions here have been well documented," said St. John's head lacrosse coach Jason Miller. "It's hard to put it into words. He leaves here a three-time All-American. He is clearly one of the best players, if not the best, in the history of this program and one of the elite players in the country. It's been a privilege to coach him here. His on-field accomplishments speak for themselves. To do all of that, in addition to being recognized for what he accomplished academically, makes his entire experience here pretty special."
"This is such a great way to end my four years at St. John's," said McArdle. "None of this could have happened without the help and hard work of my great teammates and coaches."
McArdle, a starter since his freshman year at St. John's who played over 55 games for his University, is one of two players in St. John's history to be recognized as an All-America selection. He received second team honors last season and a USILA All-America Honorable Mention nod as a sophomore in 2012, the same distinction awarded to former program all-time saves leader Joe Weingart in 1986.
Over the last four seasons, McArdle has cemented his place as his era's elite offensive threat in the BIG EAST Conference and one of the most feared attacking weapons in the country. This season, after tallying 80 points on 40 goals and 40 assists, he repeated as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and for the second year in a row was named one of 25 finalists for the coveted Tewaaraton Award. Also for the second season running, the Ronkonkoma, N.Y., native finished the regular season as the BIG EAST's leader in points per game (5.71), assists per game (2.86) and goals per game (2.86). He repeated as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and ranked in the top-10 in the NCAA in all three major offensive categories, tallying 30 more points than the second-highest scorer in the conference. As a junior, McArdle scored 85 points on 49 assists and 36 goals, finishing at the nation's assist leader and breaking the program marks for points and assists in a single season.
McArdle put together a historic season in 2014, becoming St. John's all-time career leader in points, assists and goals in three separate games, all Red Storm victories. The attackman became St. John's all-time career points leader on March 18 when he scored six goals - including the overtime winner - to go with two assists in an 11-10 home victory over local rival Hofstra to take his career points tally to 222. Just four days later, McArdle added another program record to his resume, scoring six goals in a comeback victory at Stony Brook to take his career tally to 110, the most ever at St. John's. The senior reached the program "triple crown" on March 29 when he dished out four assists in a 14-7 victory at Providence, becoming St. John's all-time career assist leader with 124. McArdle scored a total of three game-winning goals this season, including one in his final game at DaSilva Memorial Field in an 11-10 overtime victory over Villanova on Senior Day, and marked his final Queens campaign by becoming the first player in program history to record 200 points, 100 assists and 100 goals in a career.
Additionally, and in the Red Storm's season finale, McArdle scored five goals in a loss to No. 10 University of Pennsylvania to take his season goal tally to 40, the most ever by a St. John's student-athlete in a single campaign. McArdle broke his own single-season goals record since program reinstatement in 2005 - which he set last season with 36 goals - as well as St. John's all-time single-season goals mark, previously held by John Salerno who scored 38 times in 1992 during a 15-game campaign.
McArdle ended the season as the owner of the nation's second-longest point scoring streak, as the attackman recorded at least one point in 52 consecutive games, a streak which began as a freshman in a 9-4 loss to Stony Brook on March 15, 2011. The senior also graduates with the second-most assists among the NCAA's active members while his 264 career points rank him fourth in Division I among active players.
