JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Capping an outstanding and breakthrough final campaign with the Red Storm, newly graduated senior Danette Hinton wrapped up her St. John's career by placing 29th out of 48 competitors in the hammer throw at the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla., on Thursday afternoon. Throwing in the second of three flights and after enduring a lengthy delay due to thunderstorms, Hinton reached a mark of 55.65 meters.
"Danette did a fantastic job here at the East Regional and during the entire year," said Red Storm head coach Jim Hurt. "She competed great after the three-hour delay and placed in the top 30 in the Eastern United States. We could not be more proud of her efforts and of her as a person."
Thursday marked the 23rd consecutive year that St. John's track & field is represented at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. This week's East and West regionals serve as the preliminary round to the NCAA Championships, with the top 12 individuals and relay teams in each event qualifying for the NCAA Final in Eugene, Ore., from June 11-14.
After entering her senior year with a personal best just shy of 50 meters in the hammer throw, Hinton launched herself into the St. John's record books in 2014. At the famed Penn Relays on the last weekend of April, she became the program's fourth-best all-time performer in the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 57.07 meters, tops in the BIG EAST Conference this season. She was this season's runner-up at the BIG EAST Championship in the event with a mark of 53.89 meters as well as twice named BIG EAST Women's Field Athlete of the Week, and also set personal bests of 56.33 meters at the Sam Howell Invitational and 55.78 meters at the Victor Lopez Bayou Classic. Indoors, Hinton claimed the Red Storm's first conference crown of the new BIG EAST era by claiming gold in the weight throw with of throw of 18.25 meters, a full two feet clear of second place.
Hinton's twin sister Denise, who competes for LSU, placed fifth in Thursday's East Regional hammer throw competition and will represent the family at next month's NCAA Final.
St. John's is back in action at the East Regional on Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the 4x400-meter relay. The Red Storm secured the final qualifying spot thanks to its conference-leading 3:38.18 clocking at the Penn Relays. The St. John's relay is expected to feature sophomore Pariis Garcia, junior Claire Mooney and seniors Shayna Presley and Amber Allen, while junior Nastasya Rodriques has traveled to Jacksonville as a relay alternate.
