January NAC Recap: Sydorenko Takes Bronze

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm had eight current fencers and three alums compete in the January North American Cup in Salt Lake City, Utah., this past weekend. Junior Roman Sydorenko highlighted the Red Storm results, earning a medal after finishing tied for third in the Div. I men's saber.
Sophomore Deniz Berkay and St. John's alum and 2012 Olympian Daryl Homer also competed in the men's Div. I saber. Homer finished in ninth place, while Berkay finished in 98th place.
St. John's had four representatives compete in the Div. I men's epee, including two current fencers and two alums. The top finishing Red Storm fencer was sophomore Yevgeniy Karyuchenko, the 2014 NCAA Champion in the event. Karyuchenko placed 35th, while freshman Noah Adamitis finished in 137 th place. Both fencers also competed in the junior's men's epee event, in which both student-athletes produced great results. Adamitis had a very good showing and finished in 15th place, while Karyuchenko took 36th place.
Former Red Storm Benjamin Bratton led the way for the alumni in the Div. I men's epee with an 11th place finish. He was followed by fellow alum Adam Watson, who finished tied for 44th place.
On the women's side, St. John's had four current fencers compete. In Div. I women's epee, senior Isis Washington had the highest finish for the Red Storm at 47th, followed by freshmen Ally Ryf and Caira Moreira-Brown, who finished 89th and 100th, respectively. Both freshmen pulled double duty over the weekend competing in junior women's epee as well. Ryf put together a 12th place finish, while her fellow classmate Moreira-Brown finished tied for 81st place.
Redshirt sophomore Margaret McDonald was the only St. John's representative in the Div. I women's saber and finished 43rd overall.
NEXT UP
The January North American Cup was the third of four NAC's in which St. John's sends representatives. The last NAC of the season will be in Richmond, Va., from Feb. 13-16.
The Red Storm will compete as a team for only the second time this season during the week of Jan. 24-25. On Saturday, Jan. 24, St. John's will host five elite programs (Columbia, Harvard, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State) during the St. John's Invitational in Taffner Field House.
Then on Sunday, Jan. 25, the Red Storm will take a quick trip to Manhattan for the NYU Invitational. St. John's will take on host NYU, Columbia, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Wayne State, and Yale.
