Schumacher Finishes 10th at December North American Cup

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's sent five fencers to compete in the December North American Cup in Baltimore, Md., last weekend. Cooper Schumacher highlighted the Red Storm results with a 10th place finish in Div. I men's epee.
Schumacher finished with a 5-1 record in pool play as he dropped one bout to Theodore Lombardo, who went undefeated (6-0). The junior from Pompton Lakes, N.J., earned a bye to the next round after being seeded 19th following pool play. Schumacher made quick work of Albert Reiss (15-8) before easily defeating Farooq Habib of Canada, 15-6, to move onto the Table of 32.
Schumacher would continue to advance and earned a spot in the Table of 16 after recording a narrow victory over Adam Maczik (15-14). He then faced Russia's Denis Tolkachev, who defeated Schumacher, 15-9. Schumacher would still finish ahead of Tolkachev as the Red Storm fencer placed 10th , while the Russian fencer finished 11th.
Schumacher was not the only St. John's representative, as the Red Storm had three fencers compete in the Div. I men's epee. Joining Schumacher were sophomores Curtis McDowald and Alex Cotter, who finished 12th and 96th (tied), respectively.
Freshman Ben Natanzon, who won his first Junior World Cup in November, tied for 17th place in Div. I men's saber, while on the women's side sophomore Ally Ryf placed 51st in Div. I women's epee.
The December North American Cup was the third of four NAC's in which St. John's sends representatives. The final NAC of the season will be in St. Louis, Mo., from Jan. 8-11.
