QUEENS, N.Y. - With temperatures rising into the high 90s on Saturday, Marlow Schulz fought the heat and a tough field to place fourth in the 800 meter final at the 2015 USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
"Marlow ran a great race and capped an outstanding freshman year," said St. John's head coach Jim Hurt. "Running in the junior national championships at Hayward Field is a great experience and she should be back here numerous times in the years ahead."
On Friday, the freshman advanced to the final by taking fourth in her heat in the preliminary round with a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 9.45 seconds, which is the fourth-fastest in program history.
Competing in just her second individual race since April, Schulz looked comfortable and determined as she came through 400 meters in third place with a split of 1:05.82, just slightly behind Oregon's Raevyn Rogers, who was in the lead at 1:05.46.
The Whitefish, Mont., native ran with the top of the field through 600 meters, but then Rodgers, Ruby Stauber, and Sarah Walker began to pull away on the straightaway. Schulz stayed close but was unable to close the gap and finished fourth with a time of 2:10.33.
Rodgers, the 2015 NCAA outdoor champion, won the race with a time of 2:06.64, followed by Stauber at 2:08.36, and Walker at 2:08.37.
Schulz had a sensational freshman year and she was a key contributor of the decorated mile relay team, which claimed All-East honors after a silver-medal finish at the 2015 ECAC Outdoor Championships in May.
