Wozniak and Homer Compete At Grand Prix Event

QUEENS, N.Y. -- St. John's alums Dagmara Wozniak and Daryl Homer continued their season with an impressive showing at the Moscow Saber Grand Prix over the weekend. Wozniak placed ninth in the women's saber event on Sunday, while Homer placed 33rd in the men's saber event on Saturday.
Wozniak, who competed in the 2012 London Summer Olympics, was exempt from pool play. The Avenel, N.J., native was able to get out to a 7-1 lead against Iya Lekveishvili of Russia in the table of 64. Wozniak held on to the lead to win the bout 15-7.
Wozniak would then face Malgorzata Kozaczuk of Poland in the table of 32, where she jumped out to an 8-4 lead before eventually defeating Kozaczuk, 15-10.
In the table of 16, Wozniak went up against Cecilia Berder of France and found herself trailing Berder 13-6 in the second period. However, Wozniak would respond with six touches to get within one at 13-12. Berder was able to record two of the next three touches to take the 15-13 victory.
Homer was also on the London Olympic team and entered the Grand Prix event as the ninth-ranked fencer in the world. The Bronx, N.Y., native was exempt from pool play and faced Riccardo Nuccio of Italy in the table of 64. Homer was very impressive in the first period and had a 10-6 lead in the second. Nuccio was able to regroup and score seven straight touches before eventually getting the victory, 15-12.
St. John's alums Homer, Wozniak and Benjamin Bratton will next compete at the 2015 Senior World Championships in Moscow from July 13-19. Current Red Storm fencer Cooper Schumacher will represent Team USA at the World University Games, which will be held from July 3-14 in Gwangu, Korea.
