Garcia Finishes Sixth In 4x400-Meter Relay Final

QUEENS, N.Y. - After an impressive showing in the 4x400-meter relay semifinal, St. John's sprinter Pariis Garcia and her Puerto Rican teammates finished sixth in the final at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.
Garcia anchored the relay alongside teammates Grace Claxton, Alethia Marrero and Carol Rodriguez who finished with a time of 3:33.16 in the final Saturday night.
"Pariis was awesome in anchoring the Puerto Rican team to a sixth place finish," said St. John's Head Coach Jim Hurt. She ran with her usual grit & determination she has shown all year and is a great competitor. Running for one's country is a special privilege and we take great pride in her achievement. Out hat's are off to her."
The Staten Island, N.Y., native qualified for the final on Friday afternoon by finishing fourth in the first semifinal heat with a time of 3:31.21.
Garcia and her teammates ran alongside world-class competition in the final including teams such as the United States, Jamaica and Cuba.
"I loved this experience. I want to thank St. John's, the coaches and Coach Pompey for preparing me for this. It's unlike anything I've experienced, and I can use it to be even better next time," said Pariis Garcia. "I look forward to my track and field career. This motivates me for the upcoming year. This experience convinced me that this is what I want to do. I'm excited beyond words."
This past season, Garcia anchored the St. John's 4x400-meter relay that won both the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor championship.
