QUEENS, N.Y. - More than 100 golfers took to the course at Garden City Country Club on Monday as part of the Jack Kaiser Golf Classic, the annual summer golf outing that exclusively supports the Red Storm baseball program.
"Our 18th annual golf outing was an outstanding event," remarked head coach Ed Blankmeyer. "It was great to see and honor the guys from my first championship squad, the 1997 team. We see more and more alums come out each year and I look forward to the continued success of this event."
"I thought this golf outing was the best ever," added Hall of Fame coach Jack Kaiser. "We had two wonderful award winners and we honored a great championship team as well. It is always nice to see so many familiar faces come back to reconnect and support the program."
The "Coach Jack Kaiser Baseball Advocate Award" was presented at the event to both Sebby Borriello `81C and Dom Camera `64C. The highest honor that the St. John's baseball program bestows upon an alumnus, friend, benefactor, parent, coach or fan, the award is presented to an individual that possesses the same characteristics as Coach Kaiser: loyalty, dedication, hard work and exceptional support of the baseball program.
The evening also honored the 1997 St. John's squad that won the BIG EAST Tournament, the first league championship of The Blankmeyer Era. Members of that championship squad were presented with commemorative St. John's jerseys.
St. John's (41-16) advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 35th time in program-history this past season and finished as Stillwater Regional Finalists. The Red Storm also swept both the BIG EAST regular season and Tournament crowns for the second time in program-history. A program-record 11 players earned All-BIG EAST accolades and a record-tying six players were selected in the MLB Draft.
