QUEENS, N.Y. -- St. John's women's tennis head coach Lauren Leo has announced her squad's 2015 fall tournament schedule, which features four tournaments throughout the next two months.
The Red Storm opens up the season at the Stony Brook Invitational in Stony Brook, N.Y., on Sept. 11-13. After a week off, the Red Storm then travels to Providence, R.I., for the Brown Invite (Sept. 25-27).
Both of the September tournaments are new events for the women's team, which looks to build upon a second place finish in the BIG EAST last season.
In October, the team will use the first weekend of the month to travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for the UPENN Invite on Oct. 2-4. To wrap up the month, the Red Storm will have the chance to compete in the ITA Regional Championships at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.
St. John's women's tennis returns six members of the starting lineup from the 2014-15 season. Leo's roster boasts a group of talented juniors, Stephanie Elgegren, Anna Morozova and Natallia Vavulina. Morozova and Vavulina both enjoyed 15+ win seasons last year, playing mostly from the No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively. Morozova finished the year 19-7 and Vavulina finished with a 16-5 record. Elgegren finished her 2014-15 campaign with a record of 9-10, playing mostly from the No. 4 spot.
Morozova and Vavulina spent the majority of last year playing doubles together as well, finishing the year 12-4.
St. John's also has a returning sophomore class of three members, Jaide Collins, Irina Preotescu and Zofia Stanisz who look to build upon successful freshmen campaigns. As freshmen, the trio helped lead St. John's to a second place finish in the BIG EAST by combining for a 32-28 record in singles play.
The Red Storm adds three talented freshmen to round out the 2015-16 roster, including Delia Arranz, Olaya Inclan and Lisa Ellie. Arranz, a native of Spain, was ranked 814th in the world for Junior Girls last season by the ITF. Inclan, also a native of Spain, was once ranked 1106th by the WTA. Ellie adds a bit of home grown talent to the roster, as she played high school at St. Francis Preparatory School and hails from Fresh Meadows, N.Y.
