BIG EAST Release
QUEENS, N.Y. - After the NR/23 Red Storm swept the weekend in Wilmington, N.C., to improve to 7-1-0 on the season, a pair of St. John's players has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced this afternoon by the league office.
Rachel Daly and Jesse Schaefer were both recognized by the conference for their outstanding efforts this weekend, as they helped lead St. John's to wins over Campbell and Richmond at the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational.
Daly, who sits just one goal shy of tying for second place on the St. John's career goals lists, netted a pair of tallies in the Red Storm's 3-0 win over Richmond on Sunday afternoon. Her first strike came in the fourth minute, when she took possession of an Alexis Urbanski corner kick and maneuvered her way through traffic to get open before burying it in the back of the net. While her first goal displayed a deft touch, her second goal showed shear power. After taking a pass from Anna Maria Baldursdottir, Daly let one fly from 25 yards out and sent it past the Richmond keeper.
Schaefer garners her first career weekly honor after helping lead the St. John's back four to another pair of dominant performances. Earning a pair of clean-sheet victories, the Red Storm defensive unit allowed only two shots on goal for the weekend, neither of which came on Sunday. Playing a full 90 minutes in each contest, Schaefer was named to the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational All-Tournament Team. The Red Storm has earned six of their seven victories by way of a shutout this season.
The Red Storm returns to action on Sunday evening, playing host to Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m. on Belson Stadium. The game, which will be the final non-conference match up for Coach Ian Stone's squad, will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
