QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's and women's fencing programs will compete as a team in two prestigious invitationals this weekend against several elite fencing programs from across the country. The Red Storm will first host the annual St. John's Invitational Cup on Saturday, Jan. 23 in before hosting the St. John's/NYU Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 24. Both events take place in Taffner Field House.
All six schools participating - Columbia, Harvard, Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State, and host St. John's - have both their men's and women's squads in the top-10 of CollegeFencing360.com's first Coaches Poll of the 2015-16 season. The same six schools also occupied six of the seven top spots in the NCAA Fencing Championships last year and produced five of the six individual champions. Columbia is the defending NCAA champion, while St. John's finished sixth overall.
The six participants in this year's invitational have combined to win 25 of the 26 NCAA Championships since 1990, the year men's and women's teams began competing together.
At last year's invitational, the St. John's men finished fifth and the women's squad tied for fourth-place. Harvard took home the men's trophy with a 4-1 record, while the Columbia women finished with a perfect 5-0 record to win the title.
Senior saberist Roman Sydorenko led the men's team with a combined 25-5 record during last year's St. John's Invitational (13-2) and NYU Invitational (12-3), while graduate student Marta Hausman compiled a 13-2 and a 7-5 record, respectively, at both events to lead the women's team.
The St. John's Invitational Cup will start at 10 a.m., with the last round of bouts set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
Columbia, Notre Dame, Ohio State will compete in both events, with New York University, Wayne State, and Yale joining the competition for the St. John's/NYU Invitational. The event is set to begin at 9 a.m., with the last round of bouts starting at 4:00 p.m.
The men's squad finished with an impressive 5-0 record at the NYU Invitational last year, which was held at the Cobra Fencing Club in Jersey City, N.J. The women's team went 2-3, earning victories against NYU and Wayne State. A complete competition schedule for both events can be found below.
