QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team will look to extend both its perfect home and conference records as it takes on Marquette on Friday at 11 a.m at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The Red Storm will be right back at it on Sunday as Seton Hall comes to town for a showdown at noon.
St. John's (9-4, 3-0 BIG EAST) has won its last two matches with victories over Villanova and Albany. Against the Great Danes, Anna Morozova picked up two victories to help spur the Johnnies to a 4-2 win. With the victories, Morozova moved to 20-5 on the year, marking the third-straight season she has recorded at least 20 wins. Olaya Inclan notched a straight-sets victory at the No. 5 singles spot to clinch the match for the Johnnies. The victory marked the freshman's eighth win in her last nine tries in singles play and helped her earn Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Rookie of the Month honors for March.
Recently named ECAC Player of the Month Natallia Vavulina continues to be a force for the Red Storm, as she is 12-1 in singles play and is currently on a seven-match win streak. Stephanie Elgegren and Delia Arranz have won six of their past seven matches at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The last match for Marquette (10-6, 2-1 BIG EAST) was a conference duel against Xavier and they fell, 6-1, at home. This is the first matchup between the Golden Eagles and the Red Storm since the 2012 BIG EAST Championships and the first regular season match since 2009. The top player for Marquette is Silvia Ambrosio, who has won seven of her last eight singles matches played at the No. 1 spot.
St. John's will face a familiar opponent in Seton Hall (7-6, 1-1 BIG EAST) as they square off for the sixth time in the last four years. The Red Storm has won nine-straight matches against the Pirates dating back to 2008. Last season, the teams matched up in the regular season and the BIG EAST Championships where juniors Morozova and Vavulina each went 4-0. Luize Strike leads the Pirates playing at the No. 1 singles position, where she boasts a 9-4 record. Seton Hall takes on Marquette at home on Saturday before traveling to face St. John's on Sunday.
