QUEENS, N.Y. - More than 125 alumni, supporters and friends of the baseball program attended the Jack Kaiser Golf Classic on Monday at Cherry Valley Club. The annual summer golf outing provides exclusive support to the St. John's baseball program.
"It was great to see so many different eras represented at this year's Jack Kaiser Golf Classic, which is one of our staple fundraisers," said head coach Ed Blankmeyer. "This event continues to get bigger and bigger, and that is a credit to the fantastic support of our alumni."
"I am so delighted to see the continued growth of our golf outing," remarked Athletic Director Emeritus Jack Kaiser. "It seems like each year we have more and more alumni joining us to remember good times, excellent play and great relationships."
The "Coach Jack Kaiser Baseball Advocate Award" was presented at the event to John Tanner '85CBA. A member of the Baseball Alumni Committee since its inception, Tanner was a four-year letterwinner at St. John's and was a captain on the 1985 team that won the first-ever BIG EAST Tournament title.
The highest honor that the St. John's baseball program bestows upon and alumnus, friend, benefactor, parent, coach or fan, the award is presented to an individual that possesses the same characteristics as Coach Kaiser: loyalty, dedication, hard work and exceptional support of the baseball program.
The event also honored the 2008 St. John's squad that won the BIG EAST regular season championship, advanced to the NCAA Tournament and finished 42-16 to set what was then a program-record for victories. Members of that championship team were presented with commemorative St. John's jerseys.
