QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's Baseball program added yet another player to its list of major leaguers on Friday, as former hurler Matt Carasiti was promoted to the Colorado Rockies from AAA before the team's series in Philadelphia.
Carasiti earns his call-up on the heels of a dominant season split between AA and AAA. In a combined 46 innings in 2016, the reliever has compiled a 1.96 ERA, striking out 48 and surrendering only nine walks in 44 appearances. The 6-3, 205 pound righty has struck out 9.4 batters per nine innings of work and has recorded 31 saves while allowing just 30 hits. The New Britain, Conn., has registered an astounding 0.848 WHIP over that stretch.
Carasiti, taken in the sixth round of the 2012 MLB Draft, earned that season's Jack Kaiser Award as the BIG EAST Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after picking up the win in a 7-3 victory over USF to clinch the Red Storm's seventh conference crown. He was an instrumental part of the St. John's squad that advanced to that year's Super Regional, registering the win in the team's decisive win over North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
