QUEENS, N.Y. - After a stellar summer with the Newport Gulls that included a berth in the New England Collegiate Baseball League South Division Finals, rising senior Troy Dixon has been named the league's Most Valuable Player and Batting Champion, it was announced this afternoon.
Dixon won the Rick Ligi MVP Award after recording a league-best .371 batting average in 34 games this summer. The Egg Harbor Township, N.J., native belted 15 doubles on the season, tied for the most in the league, and compiled an on-base percentage of .432, good enough for fifth in the league. For the summer, Dixon tallied 49 hits, 25 runs, 18 RBIs and a pair of round-trippers to help the Gulls advance to the postseason.
As a junior for the Johnnies this past spring, Dixon was named Second Team All-BIG EAST for the second-straight season after ranking third on the squad with 35 RBIs. He compiled a stellar .994 fielding percentage, belted 11 extra-base hits and started 50 games for the Red Storm in 2016.
