QUEENS, N.Y. -- St. John's Men Golf Head Coach Mal Galletta has announced the fall portion of his schedule for the 2016-17 season. The Red Storm will compete in five tournaments this fall, highlighted by its lone home event, The Doc Gimmler.
The Johnnies will play four of its five tournaments in the tri-state area beginning with the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational hosted by Colgate University on Sept. 3-4 at the Seven Oaks Golf Club.
One week removed from the opening tilt, St. John's will host The Doc Gimmler at the Bethpage Red Course on Sept. 10-11. The field will include 13 teams and 75 players from schools that include Harvard, Johnson and Wales, Rhode Island, Seton Hall and Yale.
"We have a full-slate and a solid field coming to The Doc Gimmler this year," Galletta said. "The history of the tournament and the fact that it's played at Bethpage, a world-renowned facility that has hosted the US Open among other marquee events, makes it a popular destination for schools across the nation."
On Sept. 19-20, the Red Storm will make its way to South Kent, Conn., to compete at the Hartford Hawks Invitational at the Bull's Bridge Golf Club.
"Because of the momentum we gained at the end of last year producing four top-five finishes in our final five events, I wanted to set us up with three tournaments right off the bat to begin this season," added Galletta. "The team has been working all off-season on their own and I feel like this start can help us continue to build confidence moving forward in the year." After three-straight tournaments to open the season, St. John's takes a three-week training break before visiting the Ellington Ridge Country Club to participate in The Connecticut Cup on Oct. 10-11.
The fall season concludes with the Lehigh Invitational on Oct. 21-22, taking place at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
In addition to adding two newcomers, St. John's returns eight players from a team that finished fifth at the 2016 BIG EAST Championship. Three of those players, all freshmen a year ago, placed inside the top-10 leaderboard.
