St. John's Wraps Up Play at Stony Brook Invite

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team wrapped up play at the 11th annual Stony Brook Invite on Sunday afternoon as the team captured two singles flights championships and one doubles flight championships.
"We began the season with a number of strong performances at the Stony Brook Invite," said Head Coach Lauren Leo. "It is critical for us to build on this intital success and continue to train and stay focused, disciplined and determined to make this season a great one for St. John's."
Play began on Friday as the individual tournament featured four singles flights and two doubles flights. Junior Jaide Collins was crowned champion of Singles Flight D, going a perfect 4-0. Collins was joined by teammate Olaya Inclan, who went 4-0 to capture the Singles B title. Freshman Jessica Livianu also went 4-0 en route to a Singles Flight A title.
In Singles Flight A, Livianu defeated Elizabeth Tsvetkov of Stony Brook, 6-3, 6-1, en route to her first-ever individual championship as a collegiate tennis player. Senior teammate Anna Morozova also competed in Singles Flight A, as she went 2-0 before falling in the semifinals to Tsvetkov.
Inclan defeated Bianca Biglione of FAU by a score of, 6-2, 6-4, to capture the championship in Singles Flight B. Stephanie Elgegren also competed in this flight, going 2-1 overall including a 1-1 record in the backdraw.
In Singles Flight C, Zofia Stanisz captured the backdraw victory with three-straight wins after falling in the first round. Irina Preotescu went 1-1 and reached the quarterfinals of this flight.
Collins secured her second singles victory at the Stony Brook Invite in as many years as the junior went 3-0 at last year's tournament. This year, Collins went 4-0 and defeated Isabel Balsavage of Navy, 6-4, 6-3. Delia Arranz went 0-2 on the weekend in Singles Flight D.
The Johnnies exceeded in doubles play as well as Collins and Arranz captured the Doubles Flight B title and the Red Storm advanced three teams into the semifinals of the two doubles flights. Collins and Arranz defeated Bhimjiyani/Chikvashvilli of Stony Brook by a score of, 6-1, in the finals Sunday morning.
Coach Leo and her squad will take a two-week training break before returning to the courts for the Columbia Invite on Sept. 23-25.
