QUEENS, N.Y. - Facing some of the best collegiate fencing programs in the nation, the Red Storm struggled to get it going on the piste, as the men's team registered a 1-3 record and the women's squad went 0-4, in its final regular-season competition, at the Temple Invitational on Sunday afternoon held at McGonigle Hall.
The men's team, which currently ranks seventh in the nation, recorded its victory over Stevens, while falling to three top-six programs in No. 3 Penn State, No. 5 Penn and No. 6 Princeton. The women's fencing squad dropped bouts to four teams ranked inside the top-seven, No. 1 Princeton, No. 4 Penn, No. 5 Penn State and No. 7 Temple.
Despite facing tough competition all afternoon, the men's epee team was up to the challenge, recording a team-best 25-11 record with Shomari Moore and Cooper Schumacher each picking up nine victories. The epee squad went 4-0 on the day, as Yevgeniy Karyuchenko also added seven triumphs.
Foil fencer Andras Nemeth and saber fencer Ferenc Valkai posted the best records on the men's side, as the two student-athletes each went 10-2 at the Temple Invitational. Nemeth now boasts a 36-11 record and Valkai leads all Red Storm fencers with 50 wins on the year.
The most successful Johnny on the strip was Veronika Zuikova, who was dominant all afternoon against four of the top fencing programs in the nation, going 11-1. Her 11 wins helped the junior reach the 40-win plateau this season and the women's epee team finished 21-15 with victories over Penn State, Penn and Temple.
The women's saber team also tallied 21 wins, as newcomer Karolina Cieslar was once again solid on the piste with a 10-2 record. She is now 39-15 in her first collegiate year of fencing. The veteran Mathilda Taharo returned to action after missing the NYU Invitational and regained her form going 8-4.
Ally Ryf and Hunter Williams-Burrows each went 7-5 for the Johnnies at the Temple Invitational.
