QUEENS, N.Y. - A 2015 graduate of St. John's that played a key role in the Red Storm capturing its league-record eighth BIG EAST title that season, Joe Kuzia has been assigned to the Spokane Indians, the Northwest League affiliate of the Texas Rangers, for the upcoming 2017 campaign.
Kuzia was signed by the Rangers prior to the start of spring training and excelled over the next few months, making him the ninth member of the 2015 squad to play affiliated pro ball.
A 6-foot-5, 200-pound right-hander, Kuzia exploded onto the scene as a junior college transfer for the Red Storm in 2014, earning spots on the All-BIG EAST First Team and the ABCA All-Region Team after compiling a 0.97 ERA with a league-best 13 saves in 28 relief appearances. The Seymour, Conn., native did not allow an earned run until his 25th appearance of the season, a stretch of 34.0 innings.
The following season, Kuzia picked up three wins for the BIG EAST Champion Red Storm, playing a part in four combined shutouts and registering more than twice as many strikeouts as he did walks. He ranked second on the team with 32 appearances and compiled a 3.78 ERA.
The Indians begin their season tonight against the Boise Hawks in Spokane.
