Perfect Game/Rawlings Freshman All-America Teams
QUEENS, N.Y. - Just one day after earning Third Team All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and finding a spot on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team, St. John's pitcher Sean Mooney has earned yet another recognition for his outstanding rookie campaign, garnering Perfect Game/Rawlings First Team Freshman All-American honors.
Mooney, the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year according to Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, adds this latest honor to his resume after a stellar freshman season that saw him compile an 8-2 record with a 1.71 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP, both of which rank in the top 10 nationally.
The 2017 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year, Mooney became just the second player in the 30-plus year history of the conference to garner both awards simultaneously, joining Boston College's Chris Lambert, who accomplished the feat in 2002 before earning a First Round MLB Draft selection following his junior year.
On the season, the Marmora, N.J., native tallied 88 strikeouts and surrendered just 16 walks in 100 frames of work, the fourth highest single-season innings total in the history of St. John's baseball.
After striking out 10 Liberty batters in just five innings during his first collegiate start on March 10, Mooney went seven frames or longer in each of his next nine appearances, including six outings of eight or more innings and one complete game shutout.
