ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams
QUEENS, N.Y. - After going nearly 48 hours without garnering any new national recognition, Sean Mooney ended his drought on Saturday afternoon, finding a spot on the ABCA/Rawlings All-America Third Team.
Mooney's honor marks the third-straight year that at least one member of the Red Storm has been recognized as All-Americans by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings, as Thomas Hackimer was honored in both 2015 and 2016, while Ryan McCormick garnered second team accolades following the BIG EAST Championship campaign of 2015.
Following his ABCA/Rawlings honor, Mooney has now garnered All-America status from three different publications, as he was also named to the Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA Third Teams. In addition, the Marmora, N.J., native was recognized as the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year by both Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA.
Mooney is the first St. John's player to garner three separate All-America selections in the same season since Joe Panik did so in 2011 before being selected with the 29th pick in that year's MLB Draft.
This spring, Mooney became just the second player in the history of the BIG EAST to win the conference's Pitcher and Freshman of the Year Awards simultaneously after compiling an 8-2 record with a 1.71 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP, both of which rank in the top 10 nationally. The right-hander tallied 88 strikeouts and just 16 walks in 100 frames of work this season, the fourth-highest single-season innings total in program history. After striking out 10 in five innings of work in his first collegiate start against Liberty on March 10, Mooney went no fewer than seven frames in each of his next nine starts, including six outings of eight or more innings and one complete game shutout.
