QUEENS, N.Y. - The awards continue to roll in for Sean Mooney, who today was named a First Team Freshman All-American by Baseball America.
This honor is the latest in a long line of accolades for Mooney, who was named the National Freshman Pitcher of the Year by Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. An All-American three times over (Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA and ABCA/Rawlings) Mooney became the first player in program history to accomplish the feat since Joe Panik did so in 2011 before being selected with the 29th pick in the MLB Draft.
Mooney is the first St. John's player to be honored as a Baseball America Freshman All-American since 2010, when Jeremy Baltz and Kyle Hansen were both rewarded with spots on the squad after leading the Red Storm to a program-record 43 wins.
One of just four starting pitchers nationwide to earn a place on the Freshman All-America First Team, Mooney becomes just the third Johnny to receive first team recognition alongside Baltz and Kevin McGerry (1998).
This season, Mooney exploded on the scene for Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer, going 8-2 with a 1.71 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP, both of which rank in the top 10 nationally. Just the second player in conference history to win the league's Freshman of the Year and Pitcher of the Year awards simultaneously, Mooney recently earned a spot on USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team, playing this summer alongside some of the most recognizable names in college baseball.
