D1Baseball Freshman All-America Teams
QUEENS, N.Y. - More than a month after his stellar freshman campaign came to an end, Sean Mooney continues to garner recognition for his efforts with the Red Storm this season, earning a spot on the D1Baseball Freshman All-America First Team, it was announced this morning.
In addition to this honor from D1Baseball, Mooney has also been named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), Perfect Game/Rawlings and Baseball America. The National Freshman Pitcher of the Year according to Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, Mooney was also named an overall Third Team All-American by both those publications and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings.
After compiling an 8-2 record with a 1.71 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP, Mooney became just the second individual in the 30-plus year history of the league to garner BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year accolades simultaneously. The Marmora, N.J., native's ERA ranked eighth nationally, while his WHIP proved good enough for fifth in all of Division I.
The right-hander struck out 88 and allowed just 16 walks in 100.0 innings of work, the fourth-highest single-season innings total in program history. The first Johnny to register multiple 10-strikeout games in the same campaign since James Lomangino in 2013, Mooney put together six outings of eight innings or longer and one complete game shutout.
