QUEENS, N.Y. - Returning from a break of over a month from competition, the St. John's track and field team finished fifth at the Towson Tiger Invitational on Saturday night.
Competing at one of the most famous indoor facilities in the country, the New Balance Track and Field Armory, the Red Storm used a roster of primarily newcomers to continue to improve the depth of the team's largest roster in history.
The Johnnies were led by Nyla Woods in field events and Leah Anderson on the track as Woods captured an event win while Anderson finished with a pair of top-3 finishes.
"We got to see some good efforts by Nyla Woods in the weight throw and Leah Anderson in the 400 and the 200 but showed some rust from the long holiday break," said St. John's head coach Jim Hurt. "We have some work to do this week before getting back to full strength for the Penn Select at Ocean Breeze next Saturday."
Woods dominated the weight throw for her second-consecutive victory in that event this season. The senior finished with a score of 18.42 meters, defeating the second-place opponents by nearly two meters, and had three attempts finish over 18 meters.
Jennifer Odoemene finished sixth with a throw of 16.11 to place sixth in the same event. After fouling on her fifth throw, the junior tossed her best score of the night to captured the sixth-place honors.
After earning BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week honors following her wonderful debut in December, Anderson put together a pair of solid finishes in the 200-meter and 400-meter runs.
The freshman finished second in the 200-meter with a time of 24.95 to place just 0.01 behind the winner from Rutgers. Anderson returned to the podium in the 400-meter when she grabbed third with a time of 57.07.
Destiny Davis also posted a top-10 finish in the 200-meter event, posting a time of 25.79, while Kafi Ottley finished eighth in the 400-meter run at 59.34.
Just missing the podium was Antonia Howard in the 1000-meter run. The junior placed fourth with a time of 3:02.50.
After being a leader during the cross-country season, Stephanie Gerland ran a 10:38.50 to finish seventh in the 3000-meter event. Fellow XC contributor, Therese Gallagher, finished the 1-mile run with a great final lap to secure a 10-place finish at 5:17.68. Shannon Page and Torisha LaForce also posted solid times in the long-distance events, finishing eighth and 10th, respectively.
Back to the field events, freshman Antonia Frazier finished eighth in the long jump with a 5.27 score. Fellow freshman Amarys Berry threw a 14.08 on her first attempt of the shot put to place fourth.
After setting a new school record at the Bill Ward Meet, Sophia Alter returned with a sixth-place finish in the pole vault with a score of 2.95.
The Red Storm return to action next week with its first trip to Ocean Breeze Park in Staten Island for the Penn 8-Team Select.
