St. John’s to Run in Metropolitan Championships
10/11/2018 9:38:00 PM | Women's Cross Country
Red Storm finished sixth in the event last year.
The St. John's cross country team will run its fourth meet of the year on Friday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx when they participate in the Metropolitan Championships.
The event will begin at 11 a.m. Friday and will be the first time the Johnnies have ran since the Paul Short Invite on Sept. 29.
The Red Storm also ran in this event last year, finishing in sixth place overall. Stephanie Gerland finished with a time of 19:11.8 to lead St. John's with an 11th place finish in 2017. Ant Howard performed well in 2016 and won the event.
"We are going into the Metropolitan Championship with our top two runners looking to place up near the top of the race," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "Ant Howard won the championship two years ago and Stephanie Gerland just missed the top ten a year ago."
The Johnnies will also look to rely on a veteran presence in the middle that has been there all season from Jackie Gallagher and Shannon Page.
"Jackie Gallagher and Shannon Page have been holding down our three and four spots and we will need strong efforts from Melissa Greaves & Marsella Ventura to close out our scoring in the fifth position," Hurt said.
Three Johnnies will run for the first time this season as Leah Anderson, Torie LaForce, and Kafi Ottley will all make their 2018 debut on Friday.
