The St. John's cross country team competed in its fourth event of the season on Friday finishing fifth at the Metropolitan Championships.
The Johnnies ran at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx for the second time this season after competing in the Fordham Fiasco to open 2018.
Ant Howard led the Johnnies with a third place finish, 18:35.2. The junior led the Johnnies for the second-straight meet after leading St. John's at the Paul Short Invite two weeks ago. Following Howard for St. John's was Stephanie Gerland in 21st place and a time of 19:52.5. Gerland is the only other member of the Johnnies to lead the team this season.
Finishing third and fourth, respectively, for St. John's were Shannon Page in 39th, 20:45.5, and Jackie Gallagher in 41st, 20:49.3.
"I thought our team competed quite well despite missing a few of our top runners," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "Ant Howard was her usual stellar self, grabbing a third-place finish and Stephanie, Shannon, and Jackie continued race hard to be in our top four."
The Red Storm also had four making their 2018 debuts. Leah Anderson led that group in 65th. The sophomore posted a time of 22:37.8 in her first race of the season.
Following Anderson was freshman Marsella Ventura, who finished in 71st, 23:29.2, Torisha LaForce in 77th, 24:06.2, Melissa Greaves in 87th, 26:43.5, and Kafi Ottley in 88th, 26:43.6.
"Leah Anderson was impressive in her first outing for us as our fifth finisher that clinched a top five team finish," Hurt said. "Torie, Marsella, Melissa, and Kafi stepped up for us when we needed them."
The Red Storm will next run two weeks from Saturday on Oct. 27 at the BIG EAST Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.
