St. John's Welcomes Butler for Senior Day
10/6/2018 11:37:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on BIG EAST Digital Network
After playing Providence to a scoreless draw on Thursday night, the Red Storm returns to action at Belson Stadium on Sunday afternoon, hosting Butler for a 1 p.m. tilt.
Â
The contest will also serve as the program's annual Senior Day, as the Red Storm will recognize the contributions of nine St. John's student athletes in their final year with the squad. In addition, Sunday will also serve as the program's Score for a Cure game to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
Â
The contest will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, available on FOXSportsGO.com and the FOX Sports Mobile app. Pat O'Keefe will be on the call from Queens.
Â
The Johnnies did a superior job of limiting the Friars' potent offense on Thursday night, holding scoreless an attacking unit that tallied a total 20 shots on the evening. A key component of the Red Storm's BIG EAST draw was the effort of Scottsdale, Ariz., native Meredith Reinhardt, who recorded her second shutout of the 2018 campaign. After earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts last week, the redshirt sophomore tied a season-high six saves for the fourth time this year.
Â
Kayla Mesaros, Zsani Kajan and Lucy Whipp led the squad, each registering a trio of shots on Thursday evening. Kajan continued to live up to her reputation as a prolific offensive talent. The Budapest, Hungary, native has now recorded at least three shots in 10-straight matches, checking in at fifth in the BIG EAST for that category.
Â
Butler enters Sunday's contest with an undefeated record of at 3-0-1 in the BIG EAST, and ranked second in the league behind Georgetown. The Bulldogs have shutout their last four opponents, outscoring Marquette, Seton Hall, and Providence, 5-0, while finishing in a scoreless draw with Xavier on Thursday. Anja Savich leads the team in points (13) and goals (6), while Paige Monaghan leads the team in assists with five. Leonie Doege and Hannah Luedtke have combined for eight Butler shutouts in goal.
Â
Sunday's contest will mark the 8th time in the history of the two programs that St. John's and Butler have squared off on the pitch. The series is tied, 3-3-1, all-time, with the Johnnies falling, 1-0, in the two teams last meeting in 2017. Â
