Meredith Reinhardt makes stellar save in the 78th minute for the Red Storm
A pair of goals from Zsani Kajan alongside a stellar save from goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt in the 78th minute lift the Red Storm to a 2-1 victory over Butler on Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium, giving the Bulldogs their first conference loss of the 2018 season.
Kajan registered both Red Storm goals during Sunday's match, including the game winner in the 58th minute. The two tallies marked Kajan's second multi-scoring match of the season giving the redshirt sophomore a total nine goals on the 2018 campaign.
Reinhardt put forth another stellar effort between the pipes for St. John's (5-5-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST), making a trio of stops on the afternoon including a game changing save off of a Butler penalty kick in the 78th minute.
The Bulldogs brought the offensive pressure early registering back-to-back corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the game. However the Johnnies backline held strong and kept Butler from recording a shot.
The Red Storm broke through in the 17th minute, when Kajan converted on a penalty kick to give the Johnnies a 1-0 lead. Kajan's tally was the first goal scored on the Bulldogs since the team began conference play.
Less than four minutes later, Butler's Anja Savich recorded the equalizer to send both programs into the locker room knotted at one.
The game winning tallie came in the 57th minute when Kajan made a breakaway, weaving around BIG EAST Defender of the Week Annika Schmidt. After twirling around the Butler defender, The Budapest, Hungary, native cut back before blistering a left footed shot to the corner of the cage giving the Red Storm a 2-1 advantage.
The golden moment occurred with 15 minutes left in regulation as the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick. However as Paige Monaghan went in for the shot, Reinhardt extended her arms, making a terrific diving stop to deny the equalizer and ultimately lift the Red Storm to victory.
St. John's returns to action on Saturday night as the team travels to South Orange, N.J., for a showdown with Seton Hall. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
