The Johnnies will look to improve to 2-0 on the season for the second-straight year when they travel to Army for the 14th meeting all-time between the two programs.Â
Most recently, the Johnnies are coming off a dominate defensive attack that saw the squad force 24 turnovers, defeating Iona, 61-35, in the team's season opener. The Gaels 35 points were the fewest allowed by an opponent since the 2016-17 season when the Red Storm defeated Wagner, 62-34, at Carnesecca Arena.
The first St. John's student-athlete to earn BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year honors since Cozette Ballentine in 1988, Kadaja Bailey measured up to her title in her college debut. The Long Beach, N.Y., native recorded a double-double, netting 14 points and 13 rebounds. The 6-foot guard's 13 boards were the most by any individual player across the BIG EAST during the opening week of action. It was also the highest number in a St. John's season opener since 2014 when Amber Thompson grabbed 14 en route to the team's 61-50 victory over Yale. In addition, it marked the most boards in a freshman debut under Head Coach Joe Tartamella. As a result of her stellar first-game performance, Bailey earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Qadashah Hoppie recorded double figures in the first contest of the season, putting up 13 points to help the Johnnies to a 26-margin victory over the Gaels. Kayla Charles, Alisha Kebbe and Akina Wellere were not far behind. Charles tallied nine points and six boards in just 11 minutes of action, while Kebbe and Wellere each recorded eight points apiece for the Johnnies.Â
