Kadaja Bailey registers 14 points and 13 rebounds in season debut
Preseason BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Kadaja Bailey paced the St. John's women's basketball team with a double-double in her season debut to lift the Red Storm to a 61-35 victory over Iona on Friday evening.
In her first collegiate appearance, Bailey netted a team-high 14 points. The freshman guard, who shot 6-of-10 from the field, also recorded a team-best 13 rebounds en route to her first collegiate double-double. The Long Beach, N.Y., native also added a trio of steals in just 29 minutes of action.
Qadashah Hoppie kicked off the new season in double figures, finishing with 13 points, nine of those coming from beyond the arc.
Starters Alisha Kebbe and Akina Wellere each etched their names on the score sheet, recording eight points apiece on the evening, while Tiana England dished out a team-high six assists for the Red Storm.
"We are pleased that we were able to get our first road win," St. John's women's basketball head coach Joe Tartamella said. "Defensively we did some great things and certainly we will look to improve in a number of areas. We had some positives to build on moving forward and will continue to improve."
Curteeona Brelove made her first start for the Johnnies in the post position after sitting out the 2017-18 campaign due to NCAA transfer regulations. The redshirt senior put up the team's first points of the campaign with a drive to the bucket. The Gaels answered back within seconds to knot the game at two before the Johnnies took off on an 11-0 run to enter the second quarter with a 15-3 lead.
The Red Storm's defense disrupted the backcourt over the opening 10 minutes, forcing nine first-quarter turnovers. The Johnnies would turn the Gaels over 24 times for the game, converting those into 25 points.
On the other side of the intermission, St. John's lead by 13 before Iona inched back within 10 with under five minutes to play in the third quarter. That was as close as the Gaels would get, as the Johnnies went on 7-0 run with under three minutes left in the third period.
Behind a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter, St. John's was able to hold the Gaels to just three points in the final stanza before making the team's second 11-0 run of the evening. St. John's built its largest lead of the night at 26, thanks to a Kebbe three with under 45 seconds to play, lifting the Johnnies to their first victory of the season.
St. John's will return to action on Friday with a trip to West Point, N.Y., for a showdown with Army tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
