Johnnies and Seminoles will tip off a 2 p.m. on ESPN3
Looking to improve to 3-0 at home this season, the St. John's women's basketball team will host RV/RV Florida State on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Sky Lindsay and Ralph Bednarczyk on the call from Queens.
During Sunday's contest the team will pair up with the Go4theGoal foundation to generate awareness for pediatric cancer. Each player will be sporting a pair of gold laces as a representation for those kids battling cancer, as well as their families.
Over the years, the Red Storm (6-2) has been effective on its home court, winning its last five contests. The Johnnies enter Sunday's matchup sporting a winning record of 110-33 inside Carnesecca Arena dating back to the start of the 2009-10 season.
On Thursday night against Yale the Red Storm claimed its sixth win of the campaign, 56-52, with four of the team's five starters turning in double figures. The Johnnies drained 40.7 percent of their field goal tries, as Qadashah Hoppie, Alisha Kebbe and Akina Wellere all three netted a team-high 12 points en route to a Red Storm victory.
Leading the point for the Johnnies for the second-straight season, Tiana England came just shy of notching her second-career double-double, with 11 points and nine boards against the Bulldogs. The nine rebound effort marked a career high for the Stamford, Conn., native.
Four of the Red Storm's starters are averaging at least 9.9 points per game or better this season, led by reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Hoppie at 12.3 points per contest. The Staten Island native ranks inside the top-20 in the league for scoring and third in the conference for free throw percentage at 89.9.
In addition to its shooting ability, the Red Storm continues to be a defensive-minded team, allowing just 53.8 points per game, with opponents shooting just 39.8 percent from the floor.
Florida State (8-1) and St. John's will square off for the third time in program history. The Seminoles lead the all-time series, 2-0. This will mark the first meeting between the two programs since St. John's fell short of upsetting Florida State, 66-65, during the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2010.
Former St. John's standout Joy McCorvey will make her return to Carnesecca Arena on Sunday afternoon, but this time she will be sporting garnet and gold. McCovery is in her first season as an assistant coach for Florida State. A three-time BIG EAST All-Academic selection, McCorvey is one of just four players in St. John's history to have 700+ points and rebounds over the course of her collegiate career.
The Seminoles are coming off of a hard fought 57-56 victory against Mercer on Wednesday night, which saw junior guard Nicki Ekhomu pace the squad with a game-high 27 points. Over the season, Kiah Gillespie leads the team with a scoring average of 17.2 points per game. Gillespie is followed by Ekhomu (13.2), Nausia Woolfolk (13.0) and Valencia Myers (11.1).
Following Sunday's contest, St. John's will get nearly a week off before traveling to Philadelphia on Saturday, Dec. 15, for a 2 p.m. contest against La Salle.
