St. John's Completes South Carolina Sweep

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Playing its final match during the Spring Break holiday, the St. John's men's tennis closed the week on a high note, defeating the College of Charleston, 5-2, on Wednesday in Charleston, S.C.
The Red Storm (5-3) picked up its fourth-consecutive win and first true-road victory after defeating South Carolina State in Charleston yesterday.
In doubles play, Andrei Crapcenco and Ognjen Trejgut got it started for the Johnnies with a 6-2 victory from the No. 2 position, but the Cougars (3-3) replied with back-to-back wins to claim the doubles point.
Igor Maslov started the scoring for the visitors with a pair of 6-2 triumphs at the No. 5 spot, and Crapcenco followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 victory from the No. 3 position to quickly put the Red Storm in front.
After C of C evened the score with a win at the No. 2, Trejgut restored the advantage for the Johnnies with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Needing just one win to clinch the match, Dusan Vukicevic turned in a strong victory from the No. 4 position. The junior claimed the opening set with a convincing, 6-1, win before dropping the second, 6-3, to send the match to a third set. There, Vukicevic rolled to a 6-2 triumph to cement the dual-match victory for the Red Storm.
Luka Sucevic put the finishing touches on the win for the Johnnies with a three-set victory of his own. The junior won the opening set, 6-3, dropped the second, 6-4, and rallied for a 6-4 win for the exclamation point.
St. John's returns to the courts on Feb. 28 when the Johnnies host Fairleigh Dickinson at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows at 10:30 a.m.
