CARY, N.C. - For the third time in just six games this season and the second time in as many days, the St. John's pitching staff held its opponents scoreless on Saturday afternoon against UMBC, as the Johnnies cruised to a 12-0 victory at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Dating back to Wednesday's win over No. 6 North Carolina, St. John's has not allowed a run in 23.2 innings.
The Red Storm (6-0) put the game to bed early, plating eight runs in the top of the first before UMBC (1-1) even had a chance to respond.
Kevin Magee continued the stellar start to his season, striking out six in six scoreless frames and allowing just four hits to pick up his first win of the campaign. The senior southpaw surrendered no walks for the second straight game.
Three St. John's hurlers made their season debuts in relief of Magee and kept their ERAs spotless. Aaron Herr, Chris Henry, and David Moyer each tossed one scoreless frame for the Johnnies.
Anthony Brocato tallied his fourth career multi-homer game with a pair of bombs to left field. The senior outfielder led the way with three hits and four RBIs on the day for St. John's.
John Valente went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk, scoring three times in the process. The graduate student has tallied two hits in all six of the Red Storm's games this season.
Jamie Galazin doubled twice and drove in a run, while Luke Stampfl went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk, and a pair of runs scored.
Josh Shaw registered his second-straight two-hit effort, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double.
Robert Boselli III tallied a two-RBI double, his first extra-base hit of the campaign.
The Red Storm wasted no time getting on the board, as UMBC starter Matt Chanin walked the bases loaded with one out before Shaw lifted a sac fly to right and Boselli laced a bases-clearing double down the left field line to put the Johnnies ahead by three. After Mike Antico drew a walk to put two runners on, Brocato mashed a ball into the pine trees beyond the left field wall, bumping the Red Storm lead to six. Chris Stefl drew a walk in the next at-bat before the Johnnies left the yard again, as Valente blasted one into those same pine trees and gave the Red Storm an 8-0 lead after a half an inning.
After two scoreless frames, St. John's added another run in the top of the fourth, as Shaw raked a double down the left field line, scoring Stampfl from first.
The Johnnies tacked on two more in the sixth when Valente led off the frame with a single to third before coming around to score in the next at-bat on a Galazin double to left. Next up was Stampfl, who continued the tear with an RBI single to center.
Brocato led off the top of the seventh with his second round tripper of the day, launching a solo shot to left field and putting the Johnnies ahead by 12.
St. John's will close out its time in The Tar Heel State tomorrow, taking on Penn State at 11 a.m. at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
