QUEENS, N.Y. - For the second-consecutive day, the St. John's offense failed to muster much of anything off Connecticut's pitching, falling to the Huskies by a score of 3-1 at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Michael LoPresti suffered his first loss of the season, allowing three runs on five hits while walking a pair and striking out four in 5.1 innings of work. Jeff Belge and Gavin Hollowell closed out the game on the mound, including three shutout frames from the 6-foot-7 right hander.
Luke Stampfl and Jamie Galazin both tallied their seventh multi-hit games of the season by going 2-for-4.
Robert Boselli III drove in the Red Storm's lone run with an RBI single in the fifth, while Wyatt Mascarella and John Valente each added a base knock. Valente's hitting streak now sits at 18 games dating back to last season and his reached base streak now stands at 31.
After four and a half scoreless frames, the Red Storm (9-6) broke the deadlock in the home half of the fifth. Following a leadoff single from Stampfl and a Josh Shaw sac bunt to move the former into scoring position, Boselli smacked an RBI single to right, scoring Stampfl and giving St. John's a 1-0 lead.
UConn (9-7) quickly answered in the top of the sixth, plating three runs to move ahead by a pair. With runners on first and second and one out, Isaac Feldstein tripled to the wall in center before scoring on an RBI groundout in the following at bat.
After going down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, Galazin and Valente singled in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, but neither was able to move into scoring position.
St. John's is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, welcoming Fairfield to Jack Kaiser Stadium for a 3 p.m. tilt.
