VESTAL, N.Y. - Behind a stellar pitching performance from Sean Mooney and the Red Storm bullpen, the St. John's baseball team shut out the Binghamton Bearcats to earn a 4-0 victory to open the two-game road series on Saturday afternoon.
Mooney shined on the hill once again for St. John's (10-7) striking out eight batters over 5.1 scoreless innings to move his record to 5-1 on the year. The sophomore allowed five hits and a pair of walks, while lowering his ERA to 2.73 on the year.
Replacing Mooney in the bottom of the sixth, Joe LaSorsa held the Bearcats (4-12) scoreless over 2.2 frames and allowed just one base knock. The Katonah, N.Y., native has now hurled 17 shutout innings on the season in eight appearances for the Red Storm. Sophomore righty Gavin Hollowell closed the door on the victory with a hitless ninth inning to seal the 4-0 triumph over the Bearcats. On the campaign, the duo of LaSorsa and Holloway has struck out 24 batters over 25 scoreless frames.
Four different Johnnies registered RBIs, including John Valente who stretched his hitting streak to 20 games with a leadoff single down the right-field line in the top of the ninth. The New Rochelle, N.Y., native opened the scoring with an RBI ground out in the third.
Luke Stampfl, Anthony Brocato and Wyatt Mascarella each added an RBI in the ninth inning to help give the Johnnies the road victory.
After nothing going for either team in the first two innings, Mike Antico drew a leadoff walk in the third and then Jamie Galazin reached on a fielder's choice. Following an error put Josh Shaw on at first and moved the runner to second, Galazin swiped third to put runners on the corners. Valente then hit an RBI grounder to short to plate Galazin, giving the Johnnies the early 1-0 lead.
Jacob Wloczewski held the Johnnies hitless over the first four innings of the game, despite allowing the one unearned run, before being pulled for Nick Wegmann in the fifth. Matt Woods broke the no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Mooney allowed a leadoff triple to Jake Evans, but the sophomore battled through it with a strikeout, a ground out and a liner to second to strand the leadoff runner at third.
Next inning, the Bearcats threatened once again after the leadoff man reached on an error. Jason Agresti then doubled to right, but a relay tandem of Brocato to Shaw to Mascarella cut down Paul Rufo at the plate. Following a walk, LaSorsa came in for Mooney and recorded back-to-back outs to escape the jam with St. John's still leading, 1-0.
After eight innings of just one-hit ball by Wloczewski and Wegmann, the St. John's bats came alive in the ninth against Joe Orlando.
Valente opened the inning with a single to right to get it started for the Johnnies. Following the base hit, Brocato doubled to left to put runners on second and third. Next up, Stampfl smacked a double to center to bring home Valente and then a sacrifice by Mascarella added an insurance run as Brocato came across the plate. Boselli III, who came in as a pinch hitter, laced an RBI single through the left side to give the Red Storm a 4-0 advantage over Binghamton.
Hollowell struck out two batters in the ninth to shut the door and give St. John's its fifth shutout victory of the season.
The Red Storm continues its two-game road swing against the Bearcats at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
