QUEENS, N.Y. - In the final tune-up prior to the historic Penn Relays next week, the St. John's track and field team wrapped up play in a pair of meets over the weekend.
Georgia Tech Invitational
In the first of two meets on the weekend, the Red Storm performed strongly at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta. Competing against many top programs from around the area, the Johnnies had a pair of podium visits over the two-day meet.
Maya Stephens continued her stellar start to the outdoor season with a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash. The senior's time of 53.03 was the highest among collegiate runners, finishing only 0.6 seconds behind the winner who was unattached.
Leah Anderson also performed well in the event, posting a 54.44 mark to finish seventh overall and fourth among collegiate runners. The freshman also qualifies for the ECAC's with the time.
Amarys Berry became the second Red Storm competitor to reach the podium with a third-place mark in the shot put. The sophomore, who is coming off a title in the event at the 2018 Outdoor Metropolitan Championships last week, threw a 14.04-meter toss. The score came on her final throw of the event and also is an ECAC qualifier.
Destiny Davis set a new career-best mark in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.81 to finish 16th. The sophomore also competed in the 100-meter dash, running a 12.48 time to finish among the top-41 competitors.
Chenoa Sebastian also set a new top time in the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.51 mark to finish 19th overall and qualify for the ECAC's. The sophomore also competed in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 13th.
Also competing in the 400-meter hurdles, Jasmine Burkett reached the top-10 with an eight-place finish at 1:02.86. It was a good response for the senior after failing to finish in the same event last weekend.
Torisha LaForce also had a pair of personal bests in the 100-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles. The junior finished 12th in the hurdles with a time of 1:03.44 and just missed the top-50 in the 100-meter dash with a 12.65 time.
Stephens, Burkett, and Sebastian were joined by Kafi Ottley to run in the 4x400-meter relay and finished fifth. The time of 3:47.11 was another ECAC qualifier and was the second-best mark among schools in the region.
Anointing Onuoha and Erica Graham kicked off the jumping events with a pair of top-10 finishes, going seventh and eighth respectively. Onuoha also finished 15th in the triple jump while Graham continues to round into form.
Nyla Woods continued her solid senior season with a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw. Woods threw a 55.47-meter best on her second attempt of the day to finish second among ECAC competitors.
Wolfie Invitational
In the lone single-day meet of the weekend, the Johnnies finished seventh as a team at the Wolfie Invitational in Stony Brook on Saturday.
Therese Gallagher provided the top highlight of the meet by claiming the 3000-meter steeplechase title with a new personal-best time of 11:06.15. The sophomore's mark was the winning time by over 17 seconds and is the second time this season she has reached the podium in the event.
A pair of freshmen also recorded podium visits in the javelin and hammer throws for the Red Storm. Nina D'Amato reached the podium for the first time as a collegiate competitor with a 33.58-meter throw in the javelin and Jillian Dorego made it back-to-back third-place marks with a 40.36-meter toss in the hammer throw.
Antonia Howard reached the score sheet for the Johnnies with a seventh-place finish in the 3000-meter run. The 10:21.34 mark was a new career high for junior.
Jariah McFadden just missed the podium in the 400-meter hurdles but scored, finishing fifth with a time of 1:05.86.
Leah Rivers, Melissa Greaves, and Tiffany Perrier joined McFadden for the 4x400-meter relay team, scoring with a sixth-place mark.
Elefthreria Christogeorgou finished as the final Johnnie to reach the score sheet with a fifth-place mark in the high jump. The freshman posted the best score of her young career with a 1.50-meter jump.
St. John's returns to action next week with the second trip of the season to historic Franklin Field to compete at the Penn Relays.
