QUEENS, N.Y. - Kicking off a weekend with large conference implications, the St. John's women's tennis team started with a statement by defeating Seton Hall, 7-0, on Friday afternoon at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
The victory halts a two-match losing streak for the Red Storm (11-5) and move the hosts to 2-1 in BIG EAST play this season.
The match, originally scheduled to be played on campus at the SJU Tennis Courts, was moved indoors due to the cold weather and the possible precipitation in the area.
Beginning in doubles play, St. John's got off to a solid start with back-to-back victories to earn the quick point.
On the top court, Jessica Livianu and Zofia Stanisz won their fourth match in five tries since being paired together on March 16 with a 6-1 triumph.
Moments later, Irina Preotescu and Olaya Inclan Solis cemented the doubles point with a 6-2 victory from the No. 2 position to mark the 12th time in 16 contests the Johnnies have won doubles play.
Preotescu carried the momentum into singles play by claiming her fifth-straight victory, fourth from the No. 5 court, with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph for a 2-0 advantage.
Livianu followed her teammate with a 6-1, 6-2 win from the top spot to push the lead to 3-0 and placed the Johnnies in a position to clinch the dual-match victory. After dropping her opening singles match of the spring due to an injury, the sophomore has now won 11-consecutive tilts from the No. 1 court.
Stanisz clinched the match for the Red Storm with a two-set victory on the No. 4 spot. After rolling to a 6-1 win in the first set, the senior triumphed in a back-and-forth 7-6 second set for the dual-match win.
Kajsa Stegrell added the fifth win of the day for the hosts with a 6-4, 6-3 sweep on the No. 6 court before Jaide Collins and Solis each tallied three-set victories for the sweep.
Collins dropped a tough opening set, 6-4, but rallied to force a tiebreaker with a 7-5 victory in the second. In the third, the senior took control with a 10-4 triumph.
Solis also dropped her opening set, 7-5, before cruising to a 6-2 score in the second set to force the second tiebreaker of the afternoon. There, the junior mounted another comeback in the set to cap off a perfect afternoon for the Johnnies with a 7-6 win.
St. John's will go for back-to-back victories over conference foes against Providence on Sunday afternoon. The match is slated for a noon start from the SJU Tennis Courts in Queens.
