QUEENS, N.Y. - Playing its first night game of the season at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Tuesday evening, the No. 20 St. John's baseball team collected its 15th win in its last 16 tries with a 9-1 victory over Iona.
Jamie Galazin had a productive evening at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. The senior from Langhorne, Pa., has now driven in 10 runs in his last three appearances.
John Valente reached base three times and scored on every occasion, going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and an RBI. The graduate student reached base for the 55th-straight game dating back to last season; Valente has now gone more than a full calendar year since he last failed to reach base on April 30, 2017.
Brandon Miller made the most of his lone at-bat, knocking in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single in the sixth. Josh Shaw also brought home a run, registering his 33rd RBI of the season in the first.
Freshman Sam Lara impressed on the mound in his second career start, surrendering just two hits and a walk in four scoreless innings. The relief core of Joe LaSorsa, Joe Kelly, Turner French, Chris Henry and Aaron Herr combined to allow just one run over the final five frames.
The Red Storm (29-11) wasted no time getting on the board, as Valente drew a leadoff walk before taking second on a wild pitch. After moving to third on a Galazin grounder, Valente came home on a Shaw grounder to short, making it 1-0 in favor of the Johnnies.
Following a 1-2-3 top of the second, the Red Storm posted three more runs in the home half of the frame. After two hit-by-pitches and a Mike Antico single to load the bases, Valente poked an RBI single to right before Galazin smacked a two-run base knock to center, extending the Johnnies' lead to four after two innings.
After Iona (12-29) got on the board in the top of the sixth, the Red Storm exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning. Following an RBI single from Galazin to score Jordan Gillerman with one out, the Red Storm used a bit of trickery on the base paths to plate two more. Following a fly ball to right field from Shaw that allowed Valente to take third, Galazin deftly took off for second with the ball back in the pitcher's hand, forcing an errant throw into center and scoring both runners. After St. John's loaded the bases thanks to a Robert Boselli III hit-by-pitch, a Luke Stampfl hit and a Chris Stefl walk, Miller ripped a two-run single into right, scoring two more and extending the Johnnies' lead to eight, 9-1.
The Red Storm is off from BIG EAST action this weekend, but will welcome Liberty to Jack Kaiser Stadium for a three-game set beginning on Friday. First pitch for that game in scheduled for 6 p.m.
