QUEENS, N.Y. - As the summer heat rises, so have a pair of alumni on the international stage as Claire Mooney andStephanie Van Pelt each turned in strong performances during global competitions in July.
On Saturday evening, Mooney took center stage at the Heusden-Zolder KBC Night of Athletics in Belgium where she represented her home nation of Ireland. At the meet, Mooney clocked a new personal-best time of 2:01.61 to place second in the 800-meter dash. The former Johnnie edged out 2016 Olympian Justin Fedronic of France by one hundredth of a second, and just missed reaching the top of podium by .36 of a second.
The time also obliterated the "A" standard of 2:02.50 to qualify the 2015 graduate for the European Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany. The 2018 version of the championships will be the inaugural edition and will be held from August 2 through August 12.
Heading north of the border, Van Pelt dominated the 1500-meter run at the Série Montréal-Québec meet in Québec's Metropolis. The 2016 graduate ran a personal-best of her own, claiming the crown with a time of 4:14.54 to win the event by nearly a second.
Both competitors will continue their rigorous training schedules as Mooney prepares for the European Athletics Championships and Van Pelt gears up for multiple international competitions.
