St. John's Student-Athletes Rack Up Points at Regional Meet

QUEENS, N.Y. - With offseason training in full swing, a group of St. John's student-athletes dominated the action at the United States Track & Field East Regional Championships over the weekend.
With five of the competitors competing for the Shore Athletic Club, which housed former St. John's great and current coach for throwing John McCree as well as former national champion and current sprint coach Aliann Pompey during their competition days, the group accumulated 70 of the total 127 points earned by the club in the competition to earn first-place honors.
Starting with the women's hammer throw, a pair of Johnnies reached the scoresheet as Jennifer Odoemene andBernadette McGowan placed third and fourth, respectively, in the event. Odoemene's toss of 42.03 meters was one of three competitors to crack the 40-meter mark.
Moving into the women's discus throw, incoming freshman Samantha Morillo gave a glimpse into the future with a second-place finish in the event. The recently named Westchester/Putnam Track and Field Athlete of the Year winner launched a 39.30-meter toss to clip third-place finisher Odoemene by one hundredth of a point. Amarys Berry also scored in the event by finishing fifth with a 33.58-meter throw.
Berry put together her best performance of the afternoon in the women's shot put event when the rising junior capturing the crown by nearly a meter. The 13.73-meter throw was the lone score to eclipse the 13-meter mark. Morillo placed second with a 12.75-meter score while McGowan scored five points with a fourth-place mark at 12.10 meters. Fellow incoming freshman Ashley Walsh, who was competing as unattached, fired a 12.49-meter throw but was called for a fault and did not score.
In the women's javelin throw, Esmarelda Reyes reached the podium with a 40.99-meter throw to place second among competitors. McGowan scored for the third time on the afternoon with a fourth-place mark at 33.52 meters.
In the lone jumping event of the day, Reyes captured another five points for her club with a fourth-place finish in the women's high jump.
