Christina Bellero records first multi-goal game
Paced by Christina Bellero's first career multi-goal game, the St. John's women's soccer team recorded its fourth home win of the season, downing Delaware, 3-2, at Belson Stadium on Friday night.
In addition to Bellero's two goals, Zsani Kajan continued her stellar effort on the season recording the game winning strike in the 73rd minute. With that, the Budapest, Hungary, native lifted her goal total to seven on the season. Kajan also dished out an assist on the evening, tallying three points in the team's victory over the Blue Hens.
Samie Scaffidi dished out a pair of helpers en route to a St. John's to victory. With the two assists on the night, Scaffidi has now tallied a total four over the 2018 season to pace the Red Storm.
Notching its fourth win of the campaign at Belson Stadium, St. John's remains undefeated on its home field this season.
The Johnnies wasted no time getting on the board. In the 10th minute Scaffidi evaded her defender and rocketed a beautiful pass across the box to an open Bellero. Taking the assist, Bellero chipped in a shot to the bottom left corner of the cage for her second goal of the 2018 campaign, setting the Red Storm up for an early 1-0 lead.
After holding the Blue Hens scoreless over the next 20 minutes of action, Delaware's Riley Dixon recorded the equalizer to send both teams into the intermission with one goal each.
Less than three minutes into the latter stanza, the Red Storm struck again to take a commanding 2-1 lead. The sequence began with a pass from Lucy Whipp, who found Kajan inside the box. Kajan drew a through ball to a streaking Bellero, who delivered a quick shot to the right corner of the cage, putting her team ahead by one.
The Blue Hens responded yet again in the 61st minute when Delaware's Damali Simon-Ponte found an open opportunity to knot the game at two.
With the match tied at two, Scaffidi played a magnificent through ball for Kajan who finished in the right corner of the net for the game winner to give the Red Storm the 3-2 advantage with which it would end the contest.
Prior to Friday night's matchup the St. John's women's soccer program held a pregame ceremony on the field to recognize head coach Ian Stone who is in his 25th season at the helm of the Red Storm women's soccer program. In addition, nearly 40 St. John's women's soccer alumni who played under the guidance of Coach Stone were recognized during the intermission.
The St. John's women's soccer team will return to the pitch on Sept. 23 when the Johnnies open up BIG EAST play at Belson Stadium against reigning BIG EAST Champions Georgetown at 1 p.m.
