Ivy Plus Invitational Results
The St. John's men's tennis team returned to the courts over the weekend for their first tournament of the fall season, claiming victory in 10 matches in singles and doubles play at the Ivy Plus Invitational, hosted by Princeton University.
The tournament proved to be a valuable test for the Johnnies as they competed against 19 programs: Alabama, Buffalo, Illinois, LSU, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Tulsa, Wisconsin, and all eight of the Ivy League programs.
Sophomore Aditya Vashistha couldn't have asked for a better St. John's debut as he finished singles play with a perfect 4-0 record in the Nassau Gold bracket. Vashistha would cruise through his first three singles matches, winning in straight sets. His fourth match proved to be a battle with Columbia's Rian Pandole, but he overcame a pointless second set by winning the deciding third set, 10-6, in order to complete the perfect draw.
Seniors Luka Sucevic and Andrei Crapcenco both lost in three-set matches to open up their singles brackets to Brown's Ben Collier (3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4) and Penn's Edoardo Graziani (6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1), respectively. However, both players would bounce back from their opening defeats with two victories, each finishing with 2-1 records in singles competition.
Senior Daniel Skripnik finished singles play with a 1-2 record, suffering both losses in three sets to Brown's Robert Siniakowicz (6-1, 2-6, 11-9) and Harvard's Samuel Beren (7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-2). Skripnik's lone victory in singles play was a commanding straight-set victory over Columbia's Keshav Vellodi (6-2, 6-3).
In doubles play, Vashistha and Skripnik finished with a 1-2 record. Their lone win came in dramatic fashion as they defeated Matt Rodriguez and Taine Bernhard of the University of Oklahoma, 8-7(3).
The team of Sucevic and Crapcenco finished 0-2 in doubles play, losing to two very tough teams from Cornell and LSU.
St. John's will be sending four student-athletes (Sucevic, Crapcenco, Vashistha, and Alan Nunez Aguilera) to compete in this weekend's ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Red Storm will continue team play when they travel back to Princeton, N.J. for the five-day ITA Northeast Regional Tournament, hosted at the Lenz Tennis Center from Oct. 11-16.
