Over the weekend, two-time reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Jessica Livianu represented St. John's and the conference valiantly, as she finished with a 2-2 record at the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif.
This national collegiate championship event was held at Pepperdine University and the Malibu Racquet Club and featured the returning Player of the Year from each Division I conference with one additional wild-card spot. The tournament consisted of a double elimination 32-player men's singles draw and a double elimination 32-player women's singles draw, along with a single elimination 32-team mixed doubles draw.
Livianu, who last year became the first player from the BIG EAST Conference to reach the quarterfinals, entered as the No. 11 seed and was matched up against the No. 21 seed Marianna Petrei of the University of Idaho in the first round. The junior played toe-to-toe with Petrei throughout the entire match but came up just a bit short, losing in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Saturday proved to be a better day for Livianu as she strongly bounced back from her first-round loss, winning her first two consolation matches over Illinois State's Veronika Golonova, 7-5, 6-3, and LIU-Brooklyn's Anna Grigoryan, 6-4, 6-4.
In the semifinal draw of the consolation bracket, Livianu faced University of Denver's Bianca Wok, the reigning Summit League Player of the Year. Wok went on to play a near-perfect match against Livianu, ending the junior's tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat.
"The ITA Masters was a good warmup tournament for myself, I saw what I need to work on and what can be accomplished in the near future," quoted Livianu. "I am so qrateful to have had the opportunity to compete at such a prestigious tournament with such a high level of competitors."
Livianu and her teammates return to action this weekend, as the women's squad travel to West Point, N.Y. to compete at the West Point Invitational at the Lichtenberg and Malek Tennis Centers.
