St. John's Defeats Georgetown, 59-51, at Carnesecca Arena

Brelove leads the Red Storm with 17 points and 10 rebounds
Behind a double-double performance from Curteeona Brelove, the St. John's women's basketball team defeated Georgetown, 59-51, inside Carnesecca Arena on Friday evening.
The Malone, Fla., native notched her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Storm. The 6-foot-2 forward was a force in the second half for the Johnnies, recording 15 points and eight rebounds in the final 20 minutes of action.
The Red Storm (9-10, 2-6 BIG EAST) finished the game with a trio of players reaching double figures as Akina Wellere and Alisha Kebbe finished with 11 points apiece for the home team.
St. John's registered fewer turnovers than its opponent for the 12th time this season, coughing up just nine possessions compared to Georgetown's (9-10, 3-5 BIG EAST) 14. The Johnnies turned those 14 miscues into 14 points and outscored the Hoyas on second chance points by a 24-13 margin.
The Red Storm also dominated the Hoyas inside, scoring 34 points in the paint to Georgetown's 24, while also converting 92.3 percent (12-for-13) of its free-throw attempts.
The Johnnies got off to a hot start, unleashing an 11-2 run to boast a nine-point advantage at the midway mark of the opening quarter. The Hoyas responded with an 11-2 run of their own to knot the score at 13 with under a minute to play in the first frame.
In a tightly contested opening period, Kebbe converted in the paint to give the Johnnies a two-point lead, 15-13, after the first 10 minutes of action. Wellere fueled St. John's offense over the first 10 minutes of play, accounting for seven of the Johnnies early points.
Georgetown started the second quarter with a trio of made free throws to tack on three points and regain the lead, 16-15, in the opening minutes of the second quarter, for its final lead of the night. The Johnnies retaliated with a 7-2 spurt to take a four-point edge, 22-18, with under five minutes to play in the half.
The two teams traded off buckets over the next few minutes with the Johnnies entering the locker room leading by one, 24-23.
On the other side of the break, with the team's lead hanging in the balance, Brelove went off. The redshirt senior registered the Johnnies' next seven points. Brelove found the bottom of the bucket two more times over the third period to pace the team with 13 points after 30 minutes of action.
Entering the final frame with a 45-39 lead, the Johnnies kicked off the final 10 minutes with six unanswered points, extending its advantage to 51-39, with 7:35 left on the clock. The Hoyas answered back, rattling off a 10-2 run over the next few minutes to pull the contest within four, 53-49, with 2:58 left to play.
The two teams continued to battle in the final stanza but with under two minutes remaining, the Johnnies converted on six shots from the charity stripe to snap its five-game slide and seal its 10th-straight victory over the Hoyas.
St. John's returns to action on Sunday when the team wraps up the first half of conference play with Villanova at 2 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena.
