Red Storm will look to secure postseason berth in South Orange
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2019) – After suffering its first BIG EAST loss of the season on Wednesday night against No. 7 Georgetown, the No. 4 St. John's men's soccer team will look to resume its winning ways on Saturday evening , traveling to Owen T. Carroll Field for a clash with cross-river rival Seton Hall. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Having surrendered just five goals in 13 games heading into Wednesday night's clash with Georgetown, the Red Storm saw the Hoyas score twice in the span of 57 seconds in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory. A crowd of 2,305 fans attended the contest, the second largest crowd in the 17-year history of Belson Stadium. St. John's and Georgetown rank first and second, respectively, in this week's NCAA RPI.
Despite giving up multiple goals in a game for just the second time this season, St. John's still finds itself ranked among the national leaders in a number of key defensive metrics. The Johnnies rank seventh in Division I in goals against average, surrendering just 0.56 goals per outing. The Red Storm's .643 shutout percentage is also good enough for fifth. After allowing a pair of goals to the Hoyas, Jan Hoffelner still ranks seventh nationally in both goals against average (0.53) and save percentage (.826). His teammate Luka Gavran, who typically plays the second half and overtime between the pipes, has not played enough minutes to meet the NCAA statistical minimums, but ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in goals against average (0.58) and third in save percentage (.852).
After being shutout for just the second time this season on Wednesday night, the Red Storm will look to resume its success in the offensive third of the pitch. In 14 games this season, the Red Storm has outscored the opposition by a 30-8 margin. Leading the way for the Johnnies in that respect is sophomore forward Tani Oluwaseyi, the top point-getter in the BIG EAST with eight goals and three assists. Five of Oluwaseyi's eight markers have proven to be game-winners, good enough for the national lead in that category.
St. John's will look to pick up three crucial BIG EAST points on Saturday night in South Orange. Entering the weekend, the Johnnies (15) are one point behind Georgetown (16) for first place in the conference standings. Providence, Creighton and Marquette are locked in a three-way tie for third with nine points apiece. Butler currently occupies sole possession of the sixth and final postseason spot with seven points, while DePaul, Xavier and Seton Hall sit in a three-way tie for seventh with six points each. The top two teams in the final BIG EAST standings earn a bye to the semifinals. A win or a draw against Seton Hall would clinch a postseason spot for the Johnnies. A St. John's win coupled with a Providence loss or draw would clinch a top-two seed for the Red Storm. Georgetown, the only team to secure a postseason berth so far, could lock up a top-two seed with a win against Marquette on Saturday.
Seton Hall enters the contest with a record of 5-7 on the season, including a 2-4 mark in BIG EAST action. Since winning back-to-back home games over DePaul and Creighton to improve to 2-1 in league play, the Pirates have dropped three straight contests to Georgetown, Butler and Xavier by a combined score of 8-1.
NC State graduate transfer Stephen Elias has been the team's leading producer this season, registering four goals and two assists for 10 points. Elias, who did not appear in the team's latest match with the Musketeers, made 38 appearances and 14 starts for the Wolfpack between 2016-18.
Junior goalkeeper Andreas Nota has started every game for Seton Hall between the pipes, tallying two shutouts and posting a 1.34 goals against average to go along with a .789 save percentage.
St. John's will meet Seton Hall, the most frequently played opponent in program history, for the 41st time since 1979 when the two teams square off on Saturday night. St. John's will look to make it five wins in a row against the Pirates, having defeated Seton Hall by a score of 1-0 in each of the last four seasons.
Last year against Seton Hall, Matt Forster scored in the 10th minute off an assist from Brandon Knapp, clinching a Red Storm victory in the conference opener for both teams.
St. John's holds an 11-7 advantage in road games against the Pirates, claiming victory in each of the last four matches played in South Orange dating back to 2008.
A win on Saturday would give St. John's the first five-game winning streak for either side in the series history.
