St. John’s Travels to West Point for the Army Invitational

The Johnnies are one of eight teams competing at the Lichtenberg and Malek Tennis Centers this weekend.
QUEENS, N.Y. (Oct. 31, 2019) – The St. John's men's tennis team continues its fall season on Friday at the three-day Army Invitational, hosted at the Lichtenberg and Malek Tennis Centers in West Point, N.Y.
The Johnnies are coming off of a successful weekend at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships in Philadelphia. Charlie James and Giuseppe De Camelis began the five-day competition in the qualifying singles portion of the tournament. James punched a ticket to the main singles draw, winning both of his qualifier matches in straight sets. De Camelis was victorious in his first-round contest, eliminating Monmouth's Sergio Martinez, 6-2, 6-2. The freshman was successful in securing a bid into the main draw as he bounced Nathan Jose of Army West Point in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in his second-round qualifying tilt.
Seven members of the Red Storm competed in the 128-player main singles draw two weeks ago. Ignacio Garcia and Aditya Vashistha reached the Round of 32 in the main singles bracket, claiming three of the team's five total wins in the draw.
St. John's is one of eight programs competing in West Point, N.Y., this weekend, facing Northeast institutions such as Army West Point, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Marist, Monmouth, NJIT, and St. Bonaventure.
The competition will begin at noon on Friday with the Johnnies squaring off with Holy Cross in doubles play. The Red Storm will play its first singles matches of the weekend when they take on Army West Point at 7 p.m.
The Johnnies are scheduled to play doubles matches against Monmouth and St. Bonaventure on Saturday at 10 a.m., and noon, respectively. Dillon Pottish's squad will play its only singles contests of the day at 1:30 p.m., as they square off with Connecticut.
St. John's tournament will come to an end on Sunday with doubles matches at 10 a.m., against NJIT and singles contests with Marist at 1 p.m.
Last Year at the Army Invitational
The Johnnies dominated play throughout the weekend at last year's Army West Point Invitational, claiming 26 victories out of their 30 total matches. Collectively, the Red Storm finished with a 16-2 record in singles play and 10-2 in doubles matches.
James and Vashistha each finished the shootout with 2-0 records in singles play. James secured with two straight-set wins, outdueling NJIT's Zac Castagna (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and UConn's Christian Provenzano (6-3, 6-2). Vashistha needed three sets in both of his victories, defeating Army's David Mitchell (4-6, 6-3, 10-2) and UConn's John Holtmann (6-3, 3-6, 10-4).
Igor Maslov earned victories in all three of his singles matches last year, winning in three sets in his first two singles matches over NJIT's Javier Allende (1-6, 6-3, 10-6) and Army's Anant Mundra (6-2, 4-6, 11-9). Maslov easily won his last singles match of the tournament, 6-3, 6-4, over UConn's Brady Flanagan.
